5 Reasons to Buy an Electric Car

Back Added: 29 April 2025

It’s hard to ignore the growing momentum towards electric vehicles. While just ten years ago EVs were struggling to match their petrol and diesel counterparts in key areas, today they provide a viable alternative to ‘traditional’ cars through great levels of technology and efficiency. But if you’re still on the fence about trying an electric vehicle - and we’ve got many of them to choose from here at Auto Sportiva - what should you be thinking out? In this article, we’re outlining five key reasons to bear in mind.

Lower running costs

One of the most prominent plus-points regarding electric vehicle ownership is the chance of considerably lower running costs when compared with a traditional petrol or diesel vehicle. As with combustion-engined cars, there are some variables when you take into account where and when you charge, but if you’re able to use a home charger with an EV-focused energy tariff there are some real savings to be made. Take this Porsche Taycan GTS, for instance. It boasts a range of 373 miles but if charged at home, you could fully top it up for under £10. Not bad value for a car with this much performance.

Great performance

One area where electric vehicles can really deliver is in terms of performance. Because of the way that electric motors work, they deliver their torque instantly, giving you a real ‘zip’ away from the line when you press the accelerator. You’ll notice a big difference compared with a comparably sized petrol or diesel car, in fact, and it’s a part of EV ownership that is easy to get used to.

Good levels of space

Nearly all modern electric vehicles are based on a dedicated platform. This means that rather than being adapted from an existing petrol or diesel car, they’re created from scratch to make the most of everything that an electric powertrain can offer. One of these positive features is space. With a battery mounted underneath the car’s base EVs can offer a fully flat floor, which gives great levels of legroom and a decent amount of boot space too.

Improving range

While earlier electric vehicles did struggle range-wise, modern-day EVs are going further and further between trips to the plug. Charging speeds are ever-improving, too, meaning that you don’t need to spend as much time topping up when you’re out and about. As we’ve touched upon, the Porsche Taycan is a great example of how far electric vehicles have come. It offers well over 300 miles of range and can be topped up in super-fast time, with a 10 to 80 per cent charge taking around 20 minutes when the car is connected to an ultra-rapid charger.

Lower maintenance costs

With fewer moving parts than a traditional petrol or diesel car, electric vehicles are great for drivers who don’t want to spend too much on maintenance. While you’ll still need to look after consumables like tyres, other components such as brakes tend to wear out more slowly - electric vehicles use ‘regenerative braking’ - where the motors are reversed to slow the car down - and this means that the ‘standard’ brakes are worked as hard. Here at Auto Sportiva we’re clued-up on all things electric, so if you’ve got any more key questions about battery power then get in touch today to find out more.
