Land Rover is a brand which sits at the very core of British motoring. It’s a company behind some of the most iconic cars ever made and you’ll find many of Land Rover’s latest models among our current stock of vehicles here at Auto Sportiva.
But how did Land Rover get to where it is today, what have some of its key advancements been and what is the current state of play for the brand? In this article, we’re going to be investigating the ins and outs of Land Rover.
A Short History of Land Rover
Land Rover’s history stretches back to 1947 when a concept of a rugged, go-anywhere was created by Maurice Wilks a year before the first official Land Rover debuted at the Amsterdam Motor Show.
From there, the only way was up. In 1970, the world saw the introduction of the Range Rover which combined the off-road capability of the ‘original’ Land Rover with a more premium upmarket finish. Then, in 1989, the range was expanded with the family-friendly Discovery. A lower price point, extra space but no less versatility meant that the Discovery opened up the Land Rover experience to more people.
From then, the arrival of the Defender and Range Rover Sport showcased Land Rover in a broader area, with the former drawing its inspiration directly from the Series I car which sparked this entire adventure. It would run for over 20 years, too, until the Defender was revitalised into the car that we know today - and the one that you’ll find in our current range of available cars too.
The future looks bright for Land Rover, too. In 2025 it’s expected that the very first electric Range Rover will be introduced, taking this brand into the electric age for the first time. Alongside that, we’ll see a greater focus on efficiency alongside a lowering of CO2 emissions across the entire company’s production sites to help make this ever-evolving brand as green as can be.
Top Land Rover Models Available at Auto Sportiva
You’ll find many of Land Rover’s top models here at Auto Sportiva and we’re going to take a look at some of the current crop of available vehicles in closer detail here.
Defender
The new Defender has been a storming success. While it’s fair to say that there was some controversy when the latest car arrived, its combination of off-road prowess and premium finish has seen it go down a treat with drivers up and down the country.
This particular Defender is finished in short-wheelbase 90 specification and powered by a punchy 3.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine. An electrically deployable towbar helps to make this Defender even more versatile, too.
Range Rover Sport
The arrival of the Sport showed the Range Rover in a more dynamic light. The more modern generations of Sport - like this version on sale via our site today - added extra sharpness, bringing a sportier driving experience without losing the outright luxury that you’d expect from a Range Rover.
In this model, finished in striking ‘Firenze Red’, you’ll find luxuries such as semi-aniline perforated leather seats, a sliding panoramic sunroof and even a refrigerated central cubby - ideal for keeping drinks cool during the summer.
Discovery
As we touched upon, the Discovery was introduced to bring the Land Rover experience to more people while adding an extra level of usability to the four-wheel-drive experience. With its seven-seater configuration, the latest Discovery is the most usable to date and this version - finished in Santorini Black - has loads of extras to help make it even more luxurious.
A full Meridian sound system will make those longer journeys a little less painful, while a 360-degree parking camera can help to give some extra visibility when positioning this large SUV.
Range Rover
If you’re after the tip-top experience, then look no further than the ‘full-fat’ Range Rover. The original car marked the first time that we’d seen luxury and off-road performance combined in one car and, throughout its many generations, it has always kept this blend at its core.
This particular Range Rover is a great example of this car moving with the times, too. As well as its high-end interior and plentiful on-board technology, this P400e model incorporates a plug-in hybrid setup which aims to deliver both performance and efficiency. In fact, with a full charge, you could get up to 25 miles of electric-only range, which is more than enough for pootling around town in complete silence.
