Jaguar cars have been at the heart of British manufacturing for a long time. With a lot of history behind them, these cars have had a big impact on motoring the world over and, despite many changes, it is this British-built nature which is what many people think of when they imagine Jaguar. You’ll find many of the brand’s cars available through our website, too, so if you’re after a slice of the Jaguar experience then head to the website today.
Jaguar is now in a period of transition as it moves to an electric future. But what else do you need to know about this brand and what kind of cars has it produced? Let’s take a look.
The Evolution of Jaguar
Jaguar’s history stretches right the way back to 1922, though its first car - the SS Jaguar 2.5 saloon - came along in 1935. However, throughout its history, Jaguar’s focus has been on pushing the boundaries and delivering both luxury and performance. It’s why the famous XK120 - the fastest production car of its time in the late 1940s - went down as one of the all-time greats, while the famous C-Type’s Le Mans-winning nature saw it shoot straight into the motoring history books.
In the early 1960s, the Jaguar E-Type made its mark on the world and that sleek, elegant design remains one of the brand’s most famous models. In fact, it would go on to inspire many of Jaguar’s future models with sports cars like the modern-day F-Type drawing key points of contact to that iconic classic.
The 1990s saw the arrival of the XJ220 - the fastest production car of its time - and just after, the new XK was launched. However, in 2015 Jaguar took a big leap forward with the creation of its first SUV - the F-Pace - and this saw the brand enter into the luxury off-roader segment for the first time. It was a popular new addition to the market, too, and heralded in the arrival of many key advancements in technology. The brand would do this once again with the electric I-Pace, a car which beat many rivals to the EV punch when it was first released in 2018.
Today, Jaguar is in the process of transforming into an electric brand. In December 2024 it will reveal its first new electric vehicle which will aim to push the brand more upmarket while delivering an electric-only driving experience.
Technological Advancements and Innovations
Jaguar is a brand which has routinely pushed the envelope in terms of technology and performance. It was, for example, the creator of the disc brake - a world-changing piece of technology. Working in partnership with Dunlop, Jaguar created disc brakes as a way of giving its race cars improved stopping performance, but this soon trickled down into its ‘regular’ cars, as it would to vehicles from other brands too.
The iconic E-Type’s form was an example of Jaguar’s forward-thinking, too. Using similar processes to those used when designing aircraft meant that the E-Type gained a sleek, aerodynamic look that was close to that of a fighter plane. But as well as being regarded as one of the most beautiful cars ever made, the E-Type’s exterior design made it more efficient through the air and helped it to unlock a higher top speed than many of its key rivals at the time.
Fast-forward to the present day and you’ll find all manner of innovations in Jaguar’s latest run of cars. The F-Type, for instance, has a lightweight aluminium-based construction which brings plenty of strength and more rigidity that helps the car to react more quickly on the road. Combine that with a range of powerful engines - including Jaguar’s famous supercharged V8 engine - and you have something special.
But cars like the I-Pace have shown what Jaguar can do. When it first arrived in 2018, the I-Pace was one of the very first luxury electric SUVs, outpacing brands like Audi and BMW which had both yet to introduce similar cars. A range of up to 250 miles remains competitive even against recently introduced EVs, while the I-Pace’s innovative cabin with its dual-screen infotainment setup still looks fresh today.

But if you’re after something a little more upright, then this F-Pace could be right on the money. Plus, in R-Dynamic trim, this F-Pace gets sportier alloy wheels and a racier appearance overall.
Finally, if you’d like a more ‘traditional’ saloon car then this XE is a great option.
